Oxytetracycline was the second of the broad-spectrum tetracycline group of antibiotics to be discovered.
Oxytetracycline works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to produce proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, multiply and increase in numbers. Oxytetracycline therefore stops the spread of the infection and the remaining bacteria are killed by the immune system or eventually die.
Oxytetracycline is widely used as a therapeutic agent to inhibit the development of various bacteria, rickettsii and chlamydia. Oxytetracycline has a broad spectrum of disease-resistant microorganisms, and is a rapid bacteriostatic agent, which has a bactericidal effect on some bacteria at high concentration. The mechanism of action is that the drug can specifically bind to the A position of ribosome 30S subunit, preventing the binding of aminoacyl tRNA at this position, thus inhibiting the growth of peptide chain and affecting the protein synthesis of bacteria or other pathogenic microorganisms. Oxytetracycline has strong antibacterial activity to staphylococcus aureus, pneumococcus, pyogenic streptococcus, gonococci, meningococci, escherichia coli, aerogenic bacillus, shigella, yersinia, listeria monocytogenes, etc. In addition, oxytetracycline has strong effects on rickettsia, mycoplasma, chlamydia and actinomycetes.
