Iron(III) phosphate, also ferric orthophosphate, or ferric phosphate, FePO4, is a phosphate of iron. It is one of the few molluscicides approved for use in the practice of organic farming.
Unlike the older Metaldehyde, it is non-toxic to pets and wildlife.
It is also used rarely as an iron nutrition supplement and to reduce the risk of both haemorrhages and nosebleeds. This prepration is called called Ferrum phosphoricum.
Ferric phosphate is a white and off-white monoclinic powder. A salt in a solution of iron salts and sodium phosphate in which iron has a positive trivalent value. Its main application is to manufacture lithium iron phosphate battery materials, catalysts and ceramics.
Ferric phosphate is one of the few windex approved in organic agriculture. Unlike tetracyletaldehyde, it is not toxic to pets or wild animals.
This material is used in steel and metal manufacturing processes. Bonding Ferric phosphate to the metal surface prevents further oxidation of the metal. Its existence partly explains the corrosion resistance of Delhi's iron columns.
Ferric phosphate coating is also primarily used as a base coating to increase adhesion to the surface of iron or steel. It can also be used to bond fabrics, wood, or other materials to the surface of the said materials. Iron phosphate is usually applied as part of the painting or dusting process.
Although low conductivity, Ferric phosphate can also serve as an embedded electrode for lithium ion batteries. However, their use as electrode materials has become increasingly common in recent years as material engineers have overcome conductivity problems. Due to its thermal stability and easy recycling, FePO4 is an ideal electrode material for electric vehicle batteries.
