Gel preparations of calcium gluconate are used to treat hydrofluoric acid burns.
Calcium gluconate is also used as a cardioprotective agent in hyperkalemia. Though it does not have an effect on potassium levels in the blood, it reduces the excitability of cardiomyocytes thus lowering the likelihood of developing cardiac arrhythmias.
Calcium gluconate is a white granular powder. Odorless, tasteless. Calcium gluconate is soluble in boiling water, slowly dissolving in water but insoluble in anhydrous ethanol, trichloromethane or ether.
Calcium gluconate can reduce capillary permeability, increase capillary density, and reduce exudation. It can also reduce inflammation, swelling and allergy. It is used to reduce blood calcium and cause tetany and may also be used in magnesium poisoning.
Application of Calcium gluconate can result in redness, rash and pain at the injection site, followed by peeling and skin necrosis.
