β-Sitosterol is one of several phytosterols (plant sterols) with chemical structures similar to that of cholesterol. Sitosterols are white, waxy powders with a characteristic odor. They are hydrophobic and soluble in alcohols.
Beta-sitosterol is white scaly, needle-like crystal or crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless. Mp136-140 ℃. It is easily soluble in chloroform and carbon disulfide, slightly soluble in ethanol or acetone, and insoluble in water.
Beta-sitosterol has the function of lowering cholesterol, relieving cough, removing phlegm, inhibiting tumor and repairing tissue.
