Description:
Benzoic anhydride is a white formic crystal with a melting point of 43℃, boiling point of 360℃, 218℃ (2.67kPa), 180℃ (0.67kPa), relative density of 1.1989 (15/4℃) and refractive index of 1.5767 (15℃). Soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, propanol, ice aldehyde acid, benzene; Almost insoluble in water. Stable to water and cold alkali, hydrolyzed by boiling alkali carbonate and caustic soda.
Benzoic anhydride is obtained by the reaction of Benzoic acid and acetic anhydride. Benzoic acid, acetic anhydride and syrupy phosphoric acid are distilled together at a temperature not exceeding 120℃. When a certain amount of distillate is distilled, the reaction mixture is supplemented with acetic anhydride, and the operation is repeated. The distillate is then distilled until the reactant reaches a temperature of 270℃. The distillation residue was reduced pressure fractionated and collected at 210-220℃ under the pressure of 2.53-2.67kPa to obtain Benzoic anhydride.
Benzoic anhydride is a benzoyl hydride used in the manufacture of drugs, dyes and preservatives, as well as additive and softener of some polymers.
