Thymol is a white crystalline or crystalline powder with an aroma of thyme oil. Relative density d15150.979, melting point 48 ~ 51℃, boiling point 223℃, refractive index nD20@1.523. Soluble in ethanol and other organic solvents, slightly soluble in water and glycerin. It has a strong corrosive effect.
Add 40% sodium hydroxide solution into thymol oil, stir the reaction, add hot water to dilute, separate the layer of sodium hydroxide solution. Then, dilute hydrochloric acid was used to acidify the oil layer, and finally, after drying, the vacuum distillation was carried out to obtain the thymol product. Thymol can also be made by reacting m-cresol with isopropyl chloride at -10℃.
Thymol is used in the manufacture of spices, drugs and indicators, and is often used in the treatment of dermatomycosis and tinea.
