Polystyrene is colorless, odorless, tasteless and shiny transparent solid, soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aliphatic ketones and esters.
Polystyrene is the product of styrene monomer by addition polymerization. Polystyrene was first obtained from a volatile oil in the natural resin balsam. Polystyrene is mainly prepared from benzene and ethylene by hydrocarbonylation and dehydrogenation. The monomer can be polymerized according to free radical reaction process or ion reaction process. The performance and use of the obtained product vary greatly with the reaction type and polymerization method. Free radical polymerization of random polystyrene, temperature resistance only 80℃; Isotactic polystyrene (phenyl on the same side of the carbon chain) obtained by anion coordination polymerization can withstand up to 240℃. Polystyrene has good corrosion resistance to acid, alkali, salt, mineral oil, organic acids, low alcohols, etc. However, it is softened or dissolved in acetone, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons and other organic solvents. Good insulation, transparency, refraction, water resistance, good coloring, can be made into a variety of colorful plastic products. Melt thermal stability and mobility is very good, easy to process, can be molded, extrusion molding.
