Description:
Indole-3-acetic acid is a white crystalline powder with a melting point of 165-166 C. It is soluble in acetone and ether, slightly soluble in chloroform and insoluble in water.
Indole-3-acetic acid was used as plant growth stimulator and analytical reagent. The precursor of Indole-3-acetic acid biosynthesis in plants is tryptophan. The basic function of auxin is to regulate plant growth, not only to promote growth, but also to inhibit growth and organogenesis. In plant cells, auxin exists not only in free state, but also in bound auxin, which is firmly bound to biopolymers. It also binds to specific substances, such as indole acetyl asparagine, indole acetic acid amylose and indole acetyl glucose. This may be a way of storing auxin in cells, and also a way of detoxifying the toxicity of excess auxin.
