3-Indolepropionic acid is a white flaky crystal. The temperature of 134 ° C, soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, chloroform and ethyl acetate, soluble in hot water, difficult to dissolve in cold water. It gradually changes color in the exposed air.
The aniline hydrochloride is diazotized under acidic conditions plus sodium nitrite, and then reacted with ethyl cyclopentanone-2-carboxylate to obtain phenylhydrazine α-carbonyl oxalate. The obtained phenylhydrazine was dissolved in a solution of 20% sulfuric acid in ethanol, and refluxed for 4 hours to form indole-2-carboxylic acid-3-propionic acid. It was heated to 225-230 ° C, and the reaction was completed in about half an hour. The reaction was dissolved in boiling water, decolorized with activated carbon, and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated, crystallized, and recrystallized from hot water to give 3-Indolepropionic acid.
